1. What is LED grow light?

 

LED grow light is one type of grow lights which uses Lighting Emitting Diodes(LED) as light source, it is designed for stimulating plant growth. And it is a new technology applied in growing plants in the last few years. Now more and more people use it for indoor growing due to its energy-saving, less heat radiation, long lifetime and easy color combination advantages. It is an artificial light source used in applications where no sunlight or where supplemental light is required. The initial LED grow lights mainly use red and blue as basic color combination. After years development, other colors such as orange, white, UV, IR are requested to be added by users.

4. About the wavelength(spectrum) and photosynthesis

 

Sunlight includes visible light(those electromagnetic waves whose wavelengths are from 380nm(violet) to 750nm(red))  and invisible light, it contains 4% ultraviolet radiation, 52% infrared radiation and 44% visible light.

 

Only visible light is used by plants, but not all visible light is absorbed by plants. Please see below.

 

 

200 - 280 nm

UVC ultraviolet range which is extremely harmful to plants because it is highly toxic.

280 - 315 nm

Includes harmful UVB ultraviolet light which causes plants colors to fade.

315 - 380 nm

Rangeof UVAultraviolet light which is neither harmful nor beneficial to plant growth.

380 - 400 nm

Start of visible light spectrum. Process of chlorophyll absorption begins. UV protected plastics ideally block out any light below this range.

400 - 520 nm

This range includes violet, blue, and green bands. Peak absorption by chlorophyll occurs, and a strong influence on photosynthesis. (promotes vegetative growth)

520 - 610 nm

This range includes the green, yellow, and orange bands and has less absorption by pigments.

610 - 720 nm

This is the red band. Large amount of absorption by chlorophyll occurs, and most significant influence on photosynthesis. (promotes flowering and budding)

720 - 1000 nm

There is little absorption by chlorophyll here. Flowering and germination is influenced. At the high end of the band is infrared, which is heat.

1000+ nm

Totally infrared range. All energy absorbed at this point is converted to heat.

 

Red and blue are the most effective colors for plants growth, as for red, the absorption peak is at 660nm.
